The chain of events in Northern Westchester began just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 in Yorktown.
Multiple 911 calls were received reporting shots fired in the hamlet of Jefferson Valley in the area of the Coach N Four Apartments on East Main Street, according to the Yorktown Police Department.
Responding officers located Geraldine Krecmer, age 63, lying on the walkway in front of one of the units with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers searched the apartment and conducted a perimeter sweep for a suspect who had fled the scene.
State and federal law enforcement agencies arrived at the scene, accompanied by the Westchester County Police, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, and several local departments from both counties.
The Westchester County PD aviation and special response teams also rushed to the scene.
Evidence was gathered identifying Salvatore Ciniglio, a 51-year-old reportedly homeless man, as the suspect. His last known addresses were in Queens and the village of Ardsley.
"Apparently, Ciniglio had an estranged domestic relationship relationship with a family member of the victim," Yorktown Police said.
Information on a vehicle possibly used by Ciniglio was shared with and law enforcement agencies, and it was learned the vehicle entered the Bronx at about 10:15 p.m.
The NYPD was alerted and Ciniglio's location was narrowed to a smaller area in the borough.
At around 11:45 p.m., the NYPD located the vehicle, but as they attempted to stop it, the vehicle fled and was pursued by NYPD cruisers.
When the vehicle finally stopped, the driver, later learned to by Ciniglio shot himself as officers approached him, Yorktown Police said.
Ciniglio was transported to Jacoby Hospital on Pelham Parkway in the Bronx, where he later died.
It appears as if Ciniglio acted alone and there are no other suspects, Yorktown Police noted.
